Slack

Email is where work conversations go to get lost, and Slack is the app built on that complaint. It gathers a company's talking into channels — one for every project, team, or topic — so discussions stay sorted, searchable, and open to the people who need them, including outside partners like customers, contractors, and vendors.

When typing is not cutting it, Slack has escalations built in: video chat right inside the app with screen sharing for live walkthroughs, or recorded audio and video clips when a complicated idea needs a voice and a face but not a meeting. Documents live beside the conversation in shared docs, and project tools — templates, to-dos, task assignments, milestones — keep the work attached to the talk about the work.

The integrations are the deep end: more than 2,600 apps connect, from Google Drive and Dropbox to Salesforce, Asana, Zapier, and Figma, so approvals, calendar checks, and file permissions can be handled without leaving the chat. Search is AI-powered for finding that one file or message instantly, and Slack AI can take meeting notes so people can actually pay attention (it is a paid add-on, and some project features need a Pro, Business+, or Enterprise plan).

For distributed teams it has simply become the office: loud, searchable, occasionally chaotic, and where the day actually happens. If your work runs on messages, it runs better organized by channel than buried in an inbox.
