Microsoft Teams

Teams is Microsoft's one-app answer to the scatter of group work: communities, chats, channels, meetings, calendars, tasks, events and cloud storage under one roof. It is aimed equally at offices and at the group chat that runs a football club — the shape is the same, only the stakes change.

Starting something takes seconds: spin up a meeting and invite anyone with a link or calendar invite, chat one-to-one or to a whole community, and @mention whoever needs to actually read it. Conversations stay organized by topic and project, a group chat can turn into a voice or video call on the spot, and GIFs, emojis and message animations handle the moments words don't.

The working tools are built in rather than bolted on: share photos and video in chat, keep documents in cloud storage for access on the go, run task lists with owners and due dates, and use screenshare, whiteboard and breakout rooms when a meeting needs to feel like a workshop. Skype users will find their chats, calls and contacts carried into Teams, which absorbed it.

Underneath sits Microsoft's security pitch — enterprise-level protection and compliance from Microsoft 365, with community owners able to remove bad content or members. Two honest footnotes from the listing: some features need a personal Microsoft account, and the commercial feature set requires a paid Microsoft 365 subscription. For everyone else, the free tier covers the everyday chat-meet-organize loop.
