Spotify: Music and Podcasts

Spotify is where music streaming settled. The catalog numbers remain faintly absurd: over 80 million songs and 4 million podcasts, with 300,000+ audiobook titles added to the same app — albums, singles, original podcasts and stories, playable free on phone or tablet, and continuing on desktop, PlayStation, Chromecast, TV and Wear OS.

Discovery is the actual product. Daily music mixes are built just for you; curated playlists cover 40+ category shelves (New Releases, Charts, Made for You and more, sliceable by genre, country or decade); and search can find a song from a half-remembered lyric typed into the box. You build and share your own playlists, follow podcasts so episodes never slip past, and bookmark single episodes into playlists of their own.

The free tier streams with ad breaks; Premium removes them and adds the two features heavy listeners feel daily — downloads for offline listening, and on-demand playback of exactly the song you want. Plans come in Individual, Duo, Family and Student flavors with no commitment, and Premium audiobooks currently cover Australia, the UK and the US with 250,000+ titles. On Wear OS you can listen without your phone and control playback elsewhere.

One disclosure from the fine print, repeated because users deserve to meet it outside fine print: the app includes Nielsen audience-measurement software, which the note says lets you contribute to market research. Ordinary, disclosed, and worth knowing. Reception: 4.3 stars at 1B+ downloads — the rare giant whose score matches its standing. If you listen to anything, it's probably through this.
